The bus to the ruins stops right outside the Sumaq Machu Picchu´s front door and the family -owned hotel is the last stop before it makes the steady trek up mountain.
Inside there are staff who make you feel at home from the moment you arrive and a restaurant that isn´t afraid of a little spilled milk or ham sandwich request.

This adventure would soon test my will to live and remind me that I have
a future wife at home to take care of. It was the adventure that I wanted
and sought from the moment that I arrived in Peru.
Carlos and I headed
west from the hotel and made our way down the railroad tracks until we
came to a small opening in the dense jungle.

Qunuq chef Rafael Piqueras is an Acurio devotee who studied at the Lima outpost of Le Cordon Bleu. Unlike most Lima chefs, Piqueras emphasizes ingredients from the surrounding Andes, like alpaca and olluco (a yellowish root vegetable).
The editor visited Sumaq in August 2009.

Urban efficiency and modern design aren't usually associated with a UNESCO World Heritage site, but Sumaq (Quechua for excellent or beautiful) is pulling off both. Half of the 60 orange-and-white rooms have balconies overlooking the river; the other 30 have big windows facing the mountains.
